~ Beef Stew ~

Buy one package of cut up stew meat or buy a package of round steak that looks like you can cut into enough nice size chunks. Place 1 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a gallon size bag. Once your meat is ready place it into the bag so you can shake the meat to get it floured. If you use round steak you should chop the meat a little first, if you don’t have a meat chopper, use a heavy knife and give it some whacks, going in different directions, and on both sides of the meat. This helps to tenderize it. You can also buy pieces of round steak that are already chopped, but usually it is a little higher in price. Clean one onion, and cut it in chunks. Place a bit of oil or shortening in your frying pan and brown the meat and onion, just a bit to set the flour coating on the meat. Remove the meat and place in either a roaster or crock pot.

Next clean 1 lb. of carrots and cut into nice size chunks, do the same with 6 nice sized potatoes. You can add any vegetable you like. I like to use a few mushrooms chunked up too. Place the cut up vegetables in the flour mixture and shake round, then add a little more oil or shortening to your frying pan and slightly brown the vegetable. remove them, and add to you meat. Mix 2 packages brown gravy mix with 2 cups cold water, and pour over the meat and vegetables. Bake at 350° for 1 1/2 hour, or in your crock pot on low for 6 to 8 hours. Be sure to use a cooking spray to spray your crock pot or roaster for easier clean up. I tried one of the crock pot liners but I thought it changed the taste of the stew, but you can use one if you like.
